Slovakia confirms its first case of African swine fever
The first outbreak of the virus was reported on Tuesday (23 July) and confirmed by clinical lab tests on Wednesday (24 July).

By: The case has been reported in a backyard swine herd in Strážne, Trebišov, Kosice and is the first confirmed case of ASF in Slovakia. One animal was found to be infected but all four animals in the group were killed and disposed of as per government standards.
Biosecurity measures have been increased in and around the affected area, including the following:
- Movement control inside the country.
- Surveillance outside containment and/or protection zone.
- Surveillance within containment and/or protection zone.
- Official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste.
- Stamping out.
- Vaccination permitted (if a vaccine exists).
- No treatment of affected animals.
The affected herd in Slovakia is close to the border with Hungary, a region known to have confirmed 681 cases of ASF in wild boar with at least five new cases earlier this month (July 2019).
