BDporc Publishes First Portuguese Results
PORTUGAL and SPAIN - IRTA has made public the first technical results from the recently created BDporc Portugal (Portuguese Swine Reference Database), corresponding to the period from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. Twenty-one companies attached to the BDPorc System were analysed and 9,446 breeders were counted.

By: The BDporc-P System was created in 2015 on the initiative of IRTA and the FPAS (Federaçao Portuguesas de Associaçoes de Suinicultores).
It is a service for the swine sector, whose primary aim is to provide reference information to pig production companies to help improve decision-making.
Mean size of the Portuguese farms attached to BDPorc-P is 591sows, with an average of 27.63 piglets weaned per sow and year in the first litter, which have 24.89 days of age and an 88.24 per cent survival at weaning.
The mean fertility is 88.11 per cent, a weaning-to-conception interval of 8.11 days, and 8.75 non-productive days per cycle. Finally, sow reproduction is stopped at 29.95 months, giving birth 4.49 times throughout their lifetime.
For the technical-economic management in the porcine sector it is essential to have accurate references and statistics. Moreover, it is also useful to know which direction production and exploitation models are headed. Thus, BDporc-P is a strategic tool for the Portuguese porcine sector.
This information is of great interest for the Spanish pig industry. Through this BDPorc Service, firms in the sector will have additional comparative references to work with.
